Community energy in Ireland

Community energy in Ireland

19th April 2016

At Low Carbon Energy, we’re also ways looking for ways to improve the renewable energy landscape and help local communities. That’s exactly why we support community energy and are proactively promoting the initiative.

If you’re not exactly sure what community energy is, it’s actually quite simple. The SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland) define community energy as:

“A community in which everyone works together to develop a sustainable energy system. To do so, they aim as far as possible to be energy efficient, to use renewable energy where feasible, and to develop decentralised energy supplies.”

A Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) doesn’t just include energy suppliers and providers either. It can include all the different energy users in the community including homes, sports clubs, community centres, churches, and businesses. SEC’s are now being encouraged to join the new SEAI supported SEC Network in Ireland to help build capacity and share skills across communities. Together, we can transform our energy systems and run our own environmentally friendly solutions – whether it’s a wind farm near the sea or solar panels for a local school.

With this in mind, we are looking for partners to work with to look at developing small-scale schemes that will provide the benefit locally. So – if you’re passionate about renewable energy and / or helping the local community, why not jump on board?

Of course, there’s a lot of work to do and the process certainly won’t be quick and easy, but we need to come together to make any changes a reality. If we don’t start we will never get there.

If you’re interested in joining us on this new venture, then get in touch and we can have a chat. You can call Ged on 00 353 913 981 80 or drop us an email at info@lowcarbonenergy.co

We look forward to working with you!
