Could your business afford to lose its power?

29th April 2016

According to recent energy forecasts, Britain’s energy supply may plunge “into the red” next winter. This will not only mean UK businesses have to rely on imports and pricier alternatives; it also puts them at risk of blackouts. But how serious is the issue of blackouts and how would they affect your business? It’s about time you found out…

Stark warnings for winter

Recent figures released by National Grid have shown that there will not be enough power plants operating in the UK market to keep the lights on for the majority of winter. This is a result of old, polluting power stations having been shut down. Detailed figures show that between mid-December and early January there will be a shortfall of more than two gigawatts – enough to affect millions of businesses and homes.

Loss of power: How will it affect you?

Loss of power can greatly affect any business. According to Dunn & Bradstreet, a leading provider of business information for risk management, 59% of Fortune 500 companies experience a minimum of 1.6 hours downtime a week. Financially, this translates to £30.4m annually. Other research by the company claims that the average UK business can lose up to £3,000 per minute during a power outage. What’s more, Agility Recovery, a US provider of disaster recovery solutions, estimated that it takes 11.5 days for a business to become fully operational after a power-loss event.

Research also shows that today’s businesses are genuinely worried about loss of power. In a recent white paper by Bircham Dyson Bell, a London-based law firm, a number of concerns were listed. These included business interruption and loss of earnings, as well as jeopardy of the security of premises and equipment.

At present, as a business, your only other option is to rely on imported energy. Pricey, and risky for the nation’s economic and national security, imported energy from the Middle East doesn’t sound like a healthy, long-term solution.

Instead, why not stop relying on energy providers and start generating your own energy with our renewable energy solutions such as solar panels for businesses?
