Burnley Business Award

We’ve been shortlisted for two awards in the Burnley Business Awards!

23rd May 2022

2022 has already been an incredibly busy year for our team so far, as we continue helping ever-growing numbers of businesses to realise their Net Zero ambitions with low-carbon technologies like commercial solar panels. In recognition of our team’s hard work, we’re thrilled to announce that we’ve been shortlisted for the Burnley Business Awards in June 2022!

You’ve probably heard of the Burnley Business Awards, especially if you’re based in the North West like us. It’s a highly prestigious event organised by Burnley Council each year, intended to reward and celebrate the entrepreneurship of local businesses.

This year’s ceremony will be held at Towneley Hall on the 30th of June. If you’re going, we’ll see you there! And of course, the very best of luck to you if you’ve been nominated for any categories yourself. Here are the ones we’ve been shortlisted for!

The Environmental Excellence Award

Businesses nominated for the Environmental Excellence Award essentially must demonstrate to the judges that they’re taking sustainability seriously. The criteria for this award recognises that for today’s consumers, vague environmental promises are no longer good enough. Now more than ever, consumers want to see companies taking more proactive steps to reduce their carbon footprint, and treating climate action as a central philosophy of their business, rather than merely as a marketing tool.

In light of this growingly prevalent attitude, judges will look for evidence of:

  • A plan for reducing carbon emissions, and achieving carbon Net Zero strategies
  • Tangible progress made to implement green strategies
  • Environmental changes placed at the heart of a business, and not merely an afterthought
  • A positive sustainability impact on the business’s local community
  • A responsible and ethical approach to business

We’re in a shortlist with just two other businesses for the Environmental Excellence award – even that is quite the testament to our ever-more ambitious goals over the past few years! Today, we’re proud to be ISO 9001 and 14001 approved, and we’ve made significant headway into our carbon consumption and year-on-year savings on our product delivery.

We’ve also made some little changes too here at Low Carbon Energy, such as by reducing our travel to meetings by 60% over the past two years, recycling all of our office waste, and continuing our plan to convert our entire fleet to hybrid vehicles.

Small Business of the Year Award

This year, there are two Small Business of the Year Awards at the event – one for small businesses employing up to 19 employees and one for between 20 – 49 employees.

We’re in that second category at Low Carbon. The judges will be assessing us (and our fellow nominees) for our business performance, innovation, marketing, and potential for future growth. They’ll also be looking at our commercial success, growth and achievements to date, as well as our creativity, staff training and development.

As you’d expect, this is a particularly competitive category, so to be honest it’s an achievement in itself to have made the shortlist!

Mick Cartledge, chief executive at Burnley Council, which is leading the event, said: “I know the judges were incredibly impressed by the entries and it was a tough job to whittle down the entries to the finalists. This was especially the case in the small business categories, which were by far our most popular.”

“We are delighted to have been nominated in the two categories,” said Ged Ennis, the managing director of Low Carbon Energy. “We know that Burnley is full of brilliant businesses and we are in some very good company. To win would be the icing on the cake but simply getting in contention is a great achievement.”

The actual ceremony is only just over a month away, so we’re already getting ourselves prepared here at the Low Carbon Energy HQ. We hope to see you there!

Of course, we’d be absolutely over the moon to win an award, but ultimately what matters most to us is, quite simply, helping customers like you to realise your own low-carbon ambitions.
